Frequently Asked Questions

No software is flawless, and Midget is no exception. There are bugs, there are glitches, and then there is behaviour which is actually by design! Here are a few of the more common questions I've been asked.

General Questions

Q: What happened to Midget 4?

A: There have been several attempts at designs/prototypes for a new version of Midget, all of which involve pretty big changes. A new project called Tracquencer will essentially be what Midget 4 would otherwise have been.

Q: How do I use drums?

A: Make sure you are on channel/track 10, then select a drum kit from the instrument lists. You'll need to change the octave and experiment with the different notes (each one produces a different sound.) Usually, C-3 is a kick drum, D-3 is a snare, and F#3, G#3 and A#3 are hi-hats.

Midget 3.0 - 3.5

Q: Why does Midget crash whenever I try to play or record?

A: When playback/recording is started, Midget sends quite a lot of MIDI data, which some computers seem to have problems with. This is common for motherboards which feature on-board sound, and also for computers which use the Microsoft GS Synth driver. Install Midget 3.52 on top of your existing installation.

Q: How do I use the drum kits? I select them but hear a piano or other instrument instead.

A: Channel 10 is usually the only rhythm/drum channel. All the others are melody channels. If you click on the tab for track 10, you should find that only the drum kits will function properly.

Q: Can you help me with a problem I have with Midget 3.0?

A: You should upgrade to Midget 3.5, which fixes many of the known issues with Midget 3.0, and also is generally a better program all-round!

Midget 1.0 - 2.0

Q: When installing Midget II, why do I get an error telling me not to run Midget under Windows even when I'm not?

A: This is a bug in the installer which causes it to believe Windows 0.00 is running when the installer is run from plain DOS. You'll need to install it under Windows instead, I'm afraid.
