What is Midget?

Midget is a freeware music program for people who like to compose music without using a score or piano-roll style interface (ie: one where you place notes on a music score or grid, using a mouse.) Instead, the computer keyboard is used for placing notes on a grid and editing songs. Users of "tracker" software should be instantly familiar with the editing style, since the concept of Midget was inspired by such software.

It is ideal for anyone who doesn't have a MIDI keyboard, and/or who don't want to spend ages making music using a "point and click" method (some users may have difficulty operating a mouse, for example.) But if you do have a MIDI keyboard, Midget can make use of that.

The main aim of Midget is to allow rapid creation of music whilst requiring nothing more than the basic components of most modern computers. Corrections can be made with minimal effort, and once you're happy with your track you can save it as a MIDI file. If nothing else Midget serves as a neat way to jot down musical ideas.

Future Developments

Midget is no longer being developed. It was retired with the most recent official release of Midget being version 3.51, and a beta update (Midget 3.52) that fixes an issue with the Microsoft GS Synth driver. If Midget crashes on your computer, you need to download version 3.52.

The good news is that I do have plans to make a successor to Midget, and all suggestions are welcome for new features and improvements. If you have some ideas you want to share, pay a visit to the forum or send me an e-mail.

Thanks to everyone who has helped support this project!
